Diamonds

Diamonds are extremely hard and resistant to scratching, but they are not indestructible.

A strong knock can chip a diamond or damage the metal setting holding it in place, particularly on jewellery that is worn regularly.

Diamonds can also collect natural skin oils, creams and everyday residue, which may make them appear less bright over time, so here is our guide to keep them sparkling.

Caring for your diamonds

Alongside our general jewellery care advice, there are a few extra things to keep in mind when wearing and looking after diamond jewellery.

Settings & Claws

The diamond may be extremely durable, but the metal holding it in place naturally experiences wear.

This is particularly important with rings that are worn frequently, as claws and settings can come into regular contact with hard surfaces.

Look out for:

  • a stone that moves or feels loose;
  • a claw that looks worn, bent or different from the others;
  • a setting that catches more than usual on clothing; or
  • any noticeable change around the stone.

If you notice any of these signs, stop wearing the piece and contact us. Continuing to wear jewellery with a loose or damaged setting may increase the risk of losing the stone.

Cleaning Your Diamonds

Diamonds can attract oils and residue from everyday wear, which may make them appear less bright.

For suitable diamond jewellery, gentle cleaning can help remove this build-up. Avoid abrasive products or aggressive scrubbing that could damage the surrounding metal.

If the piece contains other gemstones, pearls, enamel, plating or another delicate material, always follow the care advice for the most sensitive part of the piece.

If you are unsure whether steam, ultrasonic cleaning or a particular cleaning product is suitable, please ask us first.

Everyday Wear

Diamond jewellery is made to be enjoyed, but frequent wear naturally exposes both the stone and its setting to knocks, friction and pressure.

Rings usually experience the most contact during everyday life, so take particular care during exercise, cleaning, gardening, DIY, heavy lifting and other hands-on activities.

Removing your jewellery during these activities can help reduce unnecessary wear to both the diamond and its setting.

What to Expect Over Time

Fine scratches and surface marks can naturally develop on the metal surrounding a diamond.

Claws, settings and other components may also gradually wear with regular use, even when the diamond itself remains in good condition.

Regular checks are therefore an important part of caring for diamond jewellery.
