Gold plated jewellery has a layer of gold applied over another metal. Gold vermeil is gold plated over a silver base.
Because the gold sits on the surface of the piece, the finish will naturally change with wear over time.
What to expect
The plated surface can gradually become lighter or wear in areas that experience the most contact and friction.
This is particularly common on rings, bracelets, clasps, edges and areas that regularly touch the skin.
How quickly this happens will vary depending on how often the piece is worn and what it comes into contact with.
Helping to preserve the finish
Alongside our general jewellery care advice, we recommend taking extra care to avoid:
- repeated exposure to water and moisture
- perfume, skincare and cosmetics directly on the jewellery
- exercising or sleeping in plated pieces
- stacking pieces where they rub against one another
- abrasive polishing or harsh cleaning products
A soft, dry cloth can be used to gently wipe the piece after wear.
