Thank you for your purchase
We hope you love your new KATA jewellery.
Every piece of jewellery needs a little care from time to time. How a piece wears will depend on its materials, how often it is worn and what it comes into contact with day to day.
We’ve put together this guide to help you look after your jewellery, understand what to avoid and recognise when your piece might benefit from a little maintenance.
If you’re ever unsure, please get in touch or bring your jewellery into store. We’ll always be happy to offer advice.

Wearing your jewellery

Jewellery is designed to be worn and enjoyed, but everyday activities can expose it to knocks, pressure, pulling and friction.
We recommend removing your jewellery before activities such as
– Exercising
– Cleaning
– Gardening
– DIY
– Anything where it may be caught, crushed or placed under unnecessary strain.
Take particular care with delicate chains, fine settings and pieces that are worn on the hands and wrists, as these tend to experience more contact during everyday life.
Water, cosmetics & chemicals
Water itself may not affect every type of jewellery in the same way, but chlorine, salt, soaps, cosmetics and repeated exposure to moisture can affect metals, finishes, gemstones and textile components.
As a general rule, remove jewellery before showering, bathing or swimming.
Perfume, hairspray, moisturiser, sunscreen and other cosmetic products are best applied before putting your jewellery on. Allow them to dry or absorb fully first.
Household cleaning products and other chemicals should also be kept away from jewellery.
Cleaning your jewellery

Gentle cleaning is usually best.
Use a soft, clean cloth to remove light surface marks and residue after wear. Avoid abrasive cloths, harsh cleaning products or home remedies, as these can damage certain metals, finishes and stones.
Not every piece is suitable for soaking, steam cleaning or ultrasonic cleaning.
If your jewellery contains gemstones, pearls, plating, enamel, thread or another delicate material, see the specific care guidance for that material below.
If you’re unsure, please ask us before cleaning it.
Storing your jewellery
Store jewellery somewhere clean, dry and away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and moisture.
Where possible, keep pieces separately in a soft pouch, jewellery box or individual compartment. This helps prevent scratching, tangling and harder stones or metals rubbing against more delicate surfaces.
Fasten chains before storing them and avoid placing heavy pieces on top of more delicate jewellery.
Check your jewellery regularly
Jewellery naturally experiences wear over time, so it is worth checking your pieces occasionally.
Look at clasps, chain links, jump rings, claws and stone settings to make sure everything still feels secure.
If a stone moves, a clasp no longer closes properly, a chain looks stretched or a setting appears worn, stop wearing the piece and contact us.
Continuing to wear jewellery when part of it is already loose or damaged may cause further damage or loss.
What to expect over time
Signs of wear can naturally develop as jewellery is used.
Depending on the piece, this may include fine scratches, surface marks, tarnishing, changes to a polished finish, wear to plating or gradual wear to moving or textile components.
How quickly these changes appear will depend on the materials, how often the jewellery is worn and what it comes into contact with.
