The greenfinches appear at different points within the composition, encouraging the viewer’s eye to travel across the work and discover each bird gradually.

The group arrangement also connects directly with one of the central ideas in Heidi’s practice. She is fascinated by the dynamics created when birds are positioned together. Rather than reproducing natural behaviour exactly, she subtly alters their placement so that ideas of confidence, hesitation, hierarchy and connection can emerge.

This gives the work an additional emotional dimension. The birds remain clearly rooted in nature, but the way they occupy the composition can also remind us of our own relationships and social interactions.

The habitat surrounding them is suggestive rather than literal. Broad, billowing forms evoke foliage while retaining a sense of freedom and abstraction, creating a work that feels both lush and contemporary.

Heidi has been creating from her home studio on the South Downs for more than 17 years, drawing inspiration from the natural world and vibrant coastal life nearby. Her artworks celebrate birds while encouraging a greater appreciation of their unique personalities and fragile habitats.
