Group dynamics are an important aspect of Heidi Langridge’s practice. She has explained that the way birds sit together within her work is carefully considered. Her intention is not to reproduce natural behaviour precisely, but to subtly alter it so the interactions begin to reflect aspects of our own relationships.

Within this composition, each long-tailed tit retains its individual presence while remaining connected to the wider group. Some appear more prominent, while others sit slightly apart, allowing viewers to form their own interpretation of the relationships between them.

The surrounding habitat is deliberately loose and expressive. Areas of pink and Indian yellow hint at foliage without becoming descriptive, creating a playful balance between recognition and abstraction.

Heidi has worked from her home studio on the South Downs for more than 17 years, taking inspiration from the natural world and the vibrant coastal environment nearby. Through her bird paintings and prints, she seeks to celebrate these creatures while encouraging appreciation of their distinct personalities and fragile habitats.
